Getting a flat tire can throw off your day in an instant. But knowing what to do in the moment can make the situation safer, less stressful, and even save your wheel or tire from further damage. Here’s a step-by-step guide to handling a flat tire like a pro.
Flat vs. Blowout: Know the Difference
A flat tire often happens slowly due to a puncture or air leak. You might notice your vehicle pulling to one side, unusual vibrations, or a thumping noise. A blowout, on the other hand, is sudden and dramatic—often accompanied by a loud bang and an immediate loss of control. This is especially challenging if it happens to a front tire, since steering can become unstable. No matter which one you experience, your first priority is safety.
Step 1: Pull Over Safely
- Stay calm. Don’t slam the brakes or make sudden moves.
- Steer smoothly toward the shoulder or a flat, stable surface away from traffic.
- Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
- Engage the parking brake once you’re stopped.
Step 2: Install the Spare Tire (If Safe)
If it’s safe to do so, follow these basic steps:
- Locate your jack, wrench, and spare tire.
- Loosen the lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- Use the jack at the proper lift point to raise the car—just enough to remove the flat.
- Swap the flat tire with the spare, then hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle and tighten the lugs fully in a star pattern.
- If your spare is a temporary “donut” tire, keep your speed under 55 mph and replace it with a full-size tire as soon as possible.
Important: If you’re on a busy highway, in bad weather, or don’t feel confident changing the tire, call roadside assistance for help rather than risking injury.
Step 3: Prevent Future Flats
While not all flats are avoidable, good maintenance goes a long way:
- Inspect tires regularly for nails, punctures, cracks, bulges, or uneven wear.
- Rotate tires about every 5,000 miles to promote even wear.
- Keep your wheels aligned to prevent premature tread wear.
- Check tire pressure monthly (and before road trips). Underinflated tires create more heat and wear, increasing the risk of failure.
